Twende NaxVegas!!
A common phrase among locals for a road trip down to Nakuru for an amazing time be it the night life or wildlife, Nakuru doesn’t disappoint!
Twende NaxVegas!!
For me it was for the love of wildlife diversity: An array of different species of flora and fauna, lush landscape, awesome! Known for its flamingos that famously blush the water pink when they gather in numbers (now you know the reason for the famous pink water landscape)
My guests (This time round am with guest from Belgium-French with their young ones) and I were on a game drive to Nakuru from Naivasha.
We checked in at Lanet Gate at around 1014hrs having driven for about an hour and forty-five minutes from Naivasha. As usual, we were greeted by the most common antelopes-Impalas, a few meters down Mburugu road, common zebra on the road nibbling the soil (this is how they obtain the minerals they lack) and these zebras are used to cars and traffic so they don’t budge leave alone twitch. So, we drive around them.
Further down, it’s “monkey business” from a troop of Ververt Monkeys. Young ones playing and sucking from their mothers. Excitement in the vehicle for my young guest. One dominant male sits conspicuously on one end of a fallen acacia looking at us. And my little boy shouted “maman, regarde. Ce singe a des coucougnette bleues’’ (Mama, look. That monkey has blue balls !!!!) Everyone burst into laughter (Yes, vervet monkey ‘business’ is blue! Somebody must have painted them blue. Haha)
We left the monkeys alone and proceeded towards the south of the Lake. This is the area you expect to see a lot of animals owing to its expansive size. More so,there is always a group of white rhinos lurking by. Lucky us ! A family of five in the midst of buffaloes.
As we venture further towards makalia falls, we spotted a pride of lions. One male, three cubs and three lionesses. Some meters away , a lion was descending from a steep side ground and crossed to the other side of the road.( The king of the Jungle crossed the road not the Chicken !)We drove slowly towards the lion watching out for action. On one side the two lionesses are digging up from what seems to be warthog burrrow. (I told my guest that there must be something in there and they are adamant to get it ) We waited for a while but unfortunately, ‘Maman, J’ai faim !’ (Mom, i’m hungry) one youngling from my vehicle cried. We left the lions and headed straight to makalia falls.
While having the meal and enjoying the scenery, call came in -the lionesses had a catch and we had to share in the meal ( as a spectator ofcourse)Arriving in three minutes the warthog was still alive struggling to remain so ! (Its thick neck makes it difficult for suffocation) As the commotion ensues, the male lion ( KING) comes down from the bush where he had retreated AND simply grabs the hog to himself …we watched as the lionesses and the cubs watched him stalk away majestically with what would have been their hard earned meal ! Literally he took the The Lion Share’ in exchange for security services he offered the pride !
Like my friends from belgium would say ; C’est la vie. We left in the hope that once he had his fill, he would atleast let the cubs have some. Such is the wonders of the jungle. After all, he is the king of the jungle.
Ps : it’s the premier of the lion king.
